I wanted to provide all Gladiators with an update on the proposed Talbot Crescent road closure.
All Gladiators were advised in mid December 2019 that some members of Stonnington Council had voted through a council resolution to permanently close Talbot Crescent where it meets Toorak Road.
The original proposal was advanced by 53 local residents and the Council then initiated a so-called ‘targeted consultation program’ which consisted entirely of a circular to local residents (Talbot Cr and Elizabeth Street) and sporting clubs. Unfortunately the largest club in the City of Stonnington, the Glen Iris Gladiators, was left off the consultation list! The circular was distributed to a population of just 78 people, with 40 positive responses (51%) and 10 negative. Clearly the results of this inadequate “targeted consultation program” and survey were never going to reflect a balanced representation of all road and precinct users.
Thank you to the many Gladiator parents and supporters who wrote directly to members of Council recording their concerns about the proposal and the traffic chaos that the road closure would present. The responses that I have seen from various Stonnington councillors to those emails made it clear that the Council would not seek to reverse their decision.
Accordingly In late December 2019 we communicated our concerns directly to Jacinta Allan MP in her capacity as the State Government Minister of Transport. On 20 December 2019 after several communications with Jacinta Allan’s office were assured that the LXRA and the State Government would not approve the Proposed Talbot Crescent Road Closure at Toorak Road. We have now received the letter below dated 6 February 2020 from Jacinta Allan confirming that the Victorian Government will not support the permanent closure of Talbot Crescent.
